Ethq Well

بئر عذق

Bir Ethq

Overview

Ethq Well is one of the lesser-known prophetic wells of Madinah, situated in the area south of the city center. It is associated with the Prophet's arrival in Madinah during the Hijrah and represents one of his earliest interactions with the landscape of his new home. The well is in a quiet area that sees fewer tourists than the more famous wells.

Historical significance

According to historical accounts, the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq stopped at this well and drank from its water upon their first arrival in the outskirts of Madinah during the Hijrah from Makkah. This moment marked the end of the arduous migration journey and the beginning of a new era for Islam. The well thus serves as a physical connection to one of the most pivotal journeys in human history.

The Hijrah journey from Makkah to Madinah took approximately eight days, with the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr taking a longer, less-traveled route to avoid Qurayshi pursuit parties.
