Bir Buda'ah

Overview

Bir Budaah is a historic well located approximately 500 meters from Masjid Nabawi in the old city area of Madinah. The well is known for a specific prophetic narration about the purity of water and was historically used for various purposes by the people of Madinah. The site has been marked and preserved, though the well is no longer in active use.

Historical significance

When some people expressed concern about the purity of the water in this well because rain runoff and other substances would flow into it, the Prophet ﷺ declared that water is pure and nothing makes it impure, as recorded in the hadith collections of Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi. This prophetic ruling became a foundational principle in Islamic jurisprudence regarding water purity, influencing legal opinions across all schools of thought for over fourteen centuries.

Did you know?

The Prophet's statement about Bir Budaah established the legal principle that large bodies of water maintain their purity unless their color, taste, or smell is visibly altered, a rule that simplified water usage for Muslims across diverse environments.

Hadith
