Bir Aris

Overview

Bir Aris, known as the Well of the Ring, is located in the Quba area close to Masjid Quba. The well is historically famous for an incident involving the Prophet's personal ring during the caliphate of Uthman. It has been preserved as a heritage site and is enclosed within a small structure that visitors can view from outside.

Historical significance

The Prophet ﷺ owned a silver ring inscribed with 'Muhammad Rasul Allah' (Muhammad, Messenger of Allah), which he used as a seal for official letters to kings and rulers. This ring was passed down to Abu Bakr, then to Umar, and then to Uthman. During Uthman's caliphate, the ring accidentally slipped from his finger and fell into this well. Despite exhaustive efforts to recover it, the ring was never found. Many historians viewed this loss as an ominous sign preceding the tribulations that followed during Uthman's later years.

Did you know?

The Prophet ﷺ had the ring made specifically because he was told that foreign rulers would not accept unsealed letters. The inscription was arranged with "Allah" on top, "Rasul" in the middle, and "Muhammad" on the bottom, out of reverence.
